The effectiveness of chemotherapy is often limited due to the poor oxygenation of tumors (this is known as hypoxia) as well as to increased or decreased activity of specific signaling pathways that help cancer cells survive this cytotoxic treatment. Also, toxicity to normal tissues often limits the doses of chemotherapy that can safely be administered.
